People are asking chatbots (1) like OpenAI's ChatGPT what stocks to buy — understandable, given that they're marketed as having the answer to any question.

But as attractive as the idea of using a machine that purports to read every earnings call, headline, and price tick seems, a new study has just shown how the robots can't compete with one of the laziest strategies in investing.

A group of researchers backtested a range of AI trading strategies over 20 years and more than 100 stocks, and found (in a paper that is not yet peer-reviewed) that most of them still couldn't beat plain buy-and-hold investing (2).

The researchers are from the University of Edinburgh, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and South Korea's Sungkyunkwan University, and they plan to present it at the ACM SIGKDD Conference on
