It's safe to say that 2026 has been quite a year so far. Budgets have been busted by rising costs. Retirement accounts have climbed, stepped back, and then sallied forth again through periodic spurts of volatility.
While it's always smart to conduct a midyear review to see if you need a financial plan tune-up, this year seems to call for it in a tangible way.
The S&P 500 (^GSPC), for instance, dropped roughly 4.6% in the first quarter, then rebounded to new all-time highs and ended the first half up more than 8% from the beginning of the year.
On a daily basis, however, stock and bond markets have been skittish.
Instead of letting anxiety get to you, use this time for a semiannual look at your whole financial picture, from spending and saving to your retirement accounts.
"Your check-up doesn't have to be complicated or require a complete overhaul, but it can be incredibly valuable to stay on track with your short- and long-term goals," Sophoan Prak, a financial adviser at Vanguard, told Yahoo Finance.
