The latest data (2) from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances shows just 54.3% of households have a 401(k) or individual retirement account (IRA).
And among those who do, less than 10% of households in each age group had $1 million or more saved in those accounts, according to a February 2025 Congressional Research Service (CRS)
