Google (GOOGL), Energy Dome Announce 200MWh CO2 Battery Project in Ireland

On June 23, Google and Energy Dome announced a bilateral commercial agreement for a 23MW/200MWh CO2 Battery project in County Offaly, Ireland. This initiative marks the first major deployment under their long-term partnership to scale long-duration energy storage. The system will store surplus renewable energy by compressing CO2 and releasing it through a turbine when power is needed, helping to stabilize the grid and alleviate congestion.

Located on a former peat-fired power plant site, the project repurposes brownfield land to support Ireland's goal of reaching 80% renewable electricity by 2030. By providing dispatchable power near critical grid nodes serving the Dublin area, the CO2 Battery will reduce the need for costly transmission upgrades. Unlike lithium-ion alternatives, the technology uses readily available, off-the-shelf components, offering a more sustainable path for securing 24/7 carbon-free energy.

The project has secured necessary land, planning permissions, and a 10-year capacity contract from EirGrid, with operations expected to begin in 2028. Energy Dome intends to expand the site
